Crayfish hide in the world's art — in paintings, coins, façades, monuments, tableware and coats of arms. PinchyArt is both a game and a crowdsourced, curated database: travel the world, judge each veiled piece — does it show a true crayfish? — and help assemble a real record of crayfish in human culture.
Why this exists
Every depiction is treated as a small, citable record — aligned to Darwin Core and Dublin Core from day one, so the atlas can travel to GBIF and the wider heritage world without ever being rebuilt. A confirmed crayfish in a 17th-century still life or on a city coat of arms is data: evidence of how people have seen, eaten, feared and honoured crayfish across time and place.
Crayfish are the heart of it, but the atlas reaches into the wider life of water — freshwater above all, though not only. Fish, aquatic insects and molluscs, the occasional octopus or jellyfish, even the people who fish: all belong to the world crayfish live in and around, so all are welcome here.
